Eleventh Annual Dinner/Cabaret Gala
Thursday, May 3, 2007
at the
New Jersey Performing Arts Center
Honoring
Anne Evans Estabrook
At its 11th annual dinner/cabaret gala on Thursday, May 3, 2007, PIP will honor Anne Evans Estabrook in recognition of her numerous contributions to the nonprofit world and her leadership in and enhancement of civic, cultural and business communities throughout the state.
As head of a family-owned real estate holding company, Mrs. Estabrook manages the Elberon Development Co. and its affiliated companies, which comprise about 31 buildings and 2.2 million square feet of space. She is also president of David O. Evans, Inc., a real estate management and construction company.
Mrs. Estabrook took over Elberon from her father after he died in 1983. She says that her father once complained that he didn't have any sons, and she recalls telling him "That's not my fault. I'm what you have to work with." He worked with her, and she more than responded, preparing for what was to be a remarkable life in business by squeezing a B.S. and an M.B.A. at Cornell into five years instead of the usual six.
Mrs. Estabrook says that today she devotes about three-quarters of her time to business and one-fourth to outside boards and charities.
A prominent member of the state's business community, Mrs. Estabrook served as chairman of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce from 2003 to 2005. She is the first and only woman to hold that position in the 96-year-old history of the chamber. In 2006 Governor Corzine appointed her to the state's Economic Growth Council.
Among her other numerous contributions to the community, Mrs. Estabrook is a strong advocate for education. She served on the lay board of trustees of Delbarton School in Morristown for 15 years and was chairman of the board for five, completing her service in 2003. She also served on the board of her alma mater (Cornell) for ten years. For 14 years until December 2002, she was a member of the Finance Council of the Archdiocese of Newark, and is currently on the board of Catholic Charities and its executive committee.
Mrs. Estabrook spent the 1970s raising three children and managing the family business. She says she combined those two tasks "with difficulty." In 1994 she married her second husband, attorney Kenneth L. Estabrook. The couple spent nine years together until 2003 when a stroke claimed his life.
Mrs. Estabrook stays in close touch with her three grown children and their families as well as her husband's children and grandchildren.
Although she is adept at managing a vast business, Mrs. Estabrook says that raising her three children was the most important job of her life. She was, she says, willing to do whatever it took to do that.
