Executive Directors need support. Their jobs are challenging and isolating and they often have little opportunity to share their concerns and frustrations with people who understand the issues they face. Numerous studies have demonstrated that executive coaching and peer support are valuable tools in reducing executive burn-out and increasing leadership effectiveness and, in building organizational capacity. This program provides Executive Directors with cost effective, real time support through monthly peer coaching sessions. These Roundtables can be critical to leadership growth and sustainable increases in organizational capacity as --
- Executives will examine their own situations from other perspectives.
- They will discuss best practices and identify resources to support their implementation.
- Executive Directors are consistently short on life balance and this forum will reinforce the importance self-care.
- The Roundtable approach is consistent with the adult learning model of talking about a situation, taking action, and reflecting on the outcome.
- Participants hold one another accountable for the commitments they make to themselves.
- It provides a sounding board for frustrations, disappointments and difficult decisions.
- The Roundtable is held off-site, and may be the only time participants can get away from constant demands on their time and energy.
- Participants will develop their coaching skills through being coached and coaching others.
- It will offer a community to the Executive Directors where they can exchange knowledge, experience, and resources with peers facing similar issues.
- Participation in the group will help them create solutions beyond what they could create on their own.
Participants
Six to eight qualified executives are selected to participate in the Roundtable that meets monthly over nine months. Each roundtable participant must be the chief executive of their organization and interested in exploring how they might improve their leadership and their organizations. Part of the success of the Roundtable is based on the anonymity of the participants. Therefore it is preferable that the executives do not know one another at all, or very well. Group dynamics dictate that there be a minimum of six and a maximum of eight participants per Roundtable.
Executives must complete an application and participate in a screening interview before being accepted into the program. Screening criteria include:
- reasons for wanting to participate,
- self awareness and openness to exploring how their own behaviors and attitudes may be affecting their leadership,
- key leadership issues and organizational issues they are facing,
- ability to commit to attending all sessions,
- goals they have identified for the experience, and
- the organization's commitment to their participation.
How it Works Dates are established prior to the program and executives commit to attending all sessions and the sessions are limited to the selected group. Prior to the first session, each participant will complete a questionnaire designed to help them identify issues that they want to focus on in the areas of organizational change, leadership and self -development. They will be asked to present their goals for their organizations, their leadership, and their personal development at the first session. During the monthly Roundtable sessions each participant will receive 25 - 30 minutes of peer coaching and will contribute to the coaching the other members receive. The goal of peer coaching is to empower the executive being coached to discover their own answers, to share common experiences and to offer resources as needed.
Schedule and Location The Roundtable will be active over nine months, and will meet for four hours on the same day and time each month. The schedule is set well in advance. The Roundtable is currently held in Chatham, NJ, but may be held in other locations based on participant needs.
Annual Fee $795 payable in full to Partnership in Philanthropy prior to the start of the Roundtable.
